At Pymble Ladies' College, we believe that work experience and other work immersion experiences are important for your career discovery journey. We also see the value in work experience to help you to build upon your 'Story of You'. Remember to continue to share your stories through your Pymble Passport, which enables you to know your passions, interests and career paths you want to pursue.
If you are aiming for a leadership role, work experience is something to add your applications and interviews for internal school opportunities. For those who are interested in studying at university (in Australia or overseas), work experience aids in the evidence you can use to support your application.
To qualify for a work experience opportunity, you must be in Year 10, 11 or 12 before application and over 15 years old.
Students are limited to one (1) in term work experience per year.
We believe that the Work Experience Program should contain opportunities that are well-structured programs facilitated by reputable organisations. Our top list of recommended experiences can be seen in the new Work Experience Board.
It is the responsibility of the student to secure their own work experience with the assistance of the Futures Department. We can help you with all the paperwork, processes, insurance, and even coach you on how to approach a prospective host employer.
When
The College recommends that work experience takes place during school holidays wherever possible.
If this is not possible, the student must apply for official leave from the College with the assistance of the Futures department. An EFAA (Exemption from Attendance) form must be completed.
Where
You can find your own work experience through reputable organisations or advertised opportunities through the Work Experience Board.
Watch out for work experience opportunities sent to you by the Futures department, these opportunities will be advertised through the Future in Focus newsletter. Make sure you update your subscription preferences to keep in the loop.
If you cannot secure a physical experience, online experiences are also opportunities the Futures department can help you with.
If you have an opportunity not listed below, please contact the Futures Department before applying to ensure suitability.
How do I find a place to go for work experience?
You can approach organisations or potential hosts directly via email or a phone call.
You can refer to our Work Experience Directory for some suggestions of organisations to approach.
You may find this example of a letter helpful as a guide. Employers receive many of these requests so think about what makes you a great (and standout) applicant who they will want to support.
If you are phoning an organisation, you may also find this script to be helpful.

Before you commence your work experience, you need to complete a Work Safety Module on The Careers Department. Once you have that completed, you will be approved for your work experience.
At this stage, you will be responsible for :
Obtaining and completing the documents for students, caregivers, and employers by due date (a least one month prior to the experience commencing).
Completing the Work Safety Modules on The Careers Department site.
Ensuring that work experience insurance is provided by your Host organisation, as long as the risk assessment is deemed satisfactory by the College. At this stage, you may be asked to provide the College's insurance information, you can access this here.
Contact your Teacher Supervisor (from your Work Placement Form) after your first day of your work placement.
You are prompt and respectful in your communication with your Host organisation.
Catch up on any missed classwork (if experience is approved for during term time).
Each experience and host is different. As part of the application process for work experience, your host will need to fill in a section on the Work Placement Form to detail the tasks you will undertake. It is important for you to be aware of these tasks and to be comfortable with what is proposed. The form will also detail what tasks you are not permitted to do (such as handling dangerous chemicals or engaging in any activities that may be hazardous).
When you have completed your work experience, you will be asked to share feedback with the Futures Team to share insights about benefits and areas for improvement. You will also need to submit a newsletter article to share your experience with the Pymble community. Please send your article (no more than 500 words) to workexperience@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au within a week of returning from Work Experience.
