How to get help
Georgina Ericsson (2021) shares her tips on applying for a Sports Scholarship.
Start broad with initial Universities - start with more than you think you need or are interested in and then cut down from there. You don’t know which schools or coaches will surprise you!
Keep up your school grades - even though a lot of International Universities use other high school exams (SAT, ACT etc.) they all require a GPA of your internal marks.
Get help and advice from others - unfortunately the US School/University system and the Australian systems work very differently. There are differences in timelines, class requirements and application processes which can be overwhelming. So, definitely ask for help from the experts so that you don’t miss anything.
Ali Savage (2011) shares her journey in studying on a sports scholarship and how it has led her to new opportunities.
What did you study?
I loved going to a college that offered a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree because it allowed me the freedom to explore areas of study before choosing my major. I ultimately decided to major in Neuroscience with a minor in Art. I took a freshman year ‘Introduction to Neuroscience’ class and fell in love with the subject immediately.
Tips to apply for a sports scholarship:
I was fortunate enough to have a teacher/mentor at Pymble who was familiar with the American College Recruiting system, Skye Halliday, who helped guide me through the process and connected me with the right people. I think since I graduated in 2010 at Pymble, a lot more girls are considering this option for further education and there is a more carved out path to follow. Balancing success in academics and sports is tricky, but a key to ensuring you are an eligible and a desirable applicant, especially for the Ivy League colleges. Pymble allowed me to do this with their elite sport athletes program, helping me balance my assignments with my sports schedule. At the end of the day, throw your hat into the ring and don’t be shy reaching out to coaches and assistant coaches expressing your interest. It was the best experience of my life!
What’s your role now?
After graduating from Dartmouth college I worked in San Francisco for 2 years in Technology before returning to Australia to study Medicine. I am currently 1 month away from graduating at Sydney University and have my internship year lined-up at Royal North Shore Hospital starting 2023. I hope to marry my experience in tech and medicine in the future and am looking forward to practicing in rural and remote areas of Australia.
